Politicians in GLCs not political interference, says Mukhriz

Mukhriz Mahathir says there is nothing wrong in politicians being in GLCs.

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir says there is nothing wrong in politicians being involved in government-linked companies (GLCs) and that it cannot be considered political interference.

He said politicians in GLCs such as State Farmers Organisation (PPN) and the Area Farmers Organisation (PPK) should be viewed positively as they can help improve the agricultural sector.

“The politician may have been appointed as he has some agricultural expertise which he could offer to the sector.

“Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had earlier said that we need to re-examine the reasons for the lacklustre performance of the agriculture sector.

“As such, we need to look at the big picture, not just the political aspect, or else how are we going to expand padi farming further,” he told reporters here today after officiating the 2019 Kedah Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen Day and Northern Zone Entrepreneurship Week.

Mukhriz said that as the agriculture sector is constantly undergoing changes, policies would have to be reviewed to improve efficiency and productivity in order to stay competitive.
