Secret mission saves Australia’s ‘dinosaur trees’ from bushfires

A SECRET operation by specialist firefighters has saved the world’s last stand of Wollemi Pines, a pre-historic species known as “dinosaur trees”, from Australia’s unprecedented bushfires, officials said.

Fewer than 200 of the trees exist in the wild, hidden in a gorge in the World Heritage Blue Mountains northwest of Sydney, which have been hit by one of the biggest bushfires that have been ravaging much of Australia for months.

Orang utan ‘temani’ wanita susukan anak

“Saya lihat dia, dia pandang saya. Dia seolah-olah mahu melindungi saya,” katanya berikutan melihat aksi spontan orang utan itu.

Menurutnya lagi, dia membuat keputusan untuk melawat Zoo Schoenbrunn, Austria memandangkan ia adalah zoo tertua di dunia, dibuka sujak 31 Julai 1752.

“Sebab itulah saya datang ke sini kerana saya tidak tahu sama ada boleh melihat Orang Utan lagi ataupun tidak,” ujarnya.

Win fantastic prizes at Dogathon 2020

SERDANG: Get your leash and collar out! Start running more with your dog instead of walking! For the 23rd instalment of Dogathon is upon us and there will be lots of fun, games and prizes for both two and four-legged participants.

An annual event organised since 1997 by the VETERNAK and Zoologico Club of the Veterinary Medicine Faculty, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Dogathon is meant for dogs to socialise and build stronger bonds with their owners.

Speaking to FMT, lead organisers Wong Jun Yong , 23, and Tey Yu Chong, 22, said that the objective of the run is to raise funds for the Pro-Kasih programme which is a catch, spay and neuter programme for stray dogs.

Wong Jun Yong (left), 23, and Tey Yu Chong, 22, head the Dogathon organizing committee this year.

“In addition, we would like to raise pet owners’ awareness on rabies. We encourage owners to learn how to prevent the spread of rabies among dogs,” they said.

The Dogathon’s second mission is to help raise awareness on the state of animal welfare in Malaysia.

For Dogathon 2020, a total of four categories are open to participants, two for male owners and two for female.

Registration of participants is on a first come, first served basis.

Other than the race itself, there will be a variety of activities and booths for dogs and owners to enjoy. (Dogathon pic)

Each sub-category will be open to fifty participants and their dogs, and will be divided based on the size of the dog.

Dogs with a height of 35cm and below will be allowed entry into the small breed sub-category and dogs above 35cm are to enter the large breed sub-category.

Prior to being allowed entry, dogs must first undergo an on-the-spot health check to ensure that they are in the proper condition to run.

The Dogathon race track which winds around Bukit Ekspo on the university grounds has been lengthened to 2.5km this year, say Wong and Tey.

Other than the race track, a variety of obstacles have also been put in place to add to the challenge that the participants will have to go through.

To ensure the dogs are not overly exhausted by their physical exertions, water bowls will be strategically placed throughout the track.

The only rule of the race is that human participants are not allowed to drag or carry their dogs, so there is nothing much that can be done if your dog decides to plop down on the track for a rest.

All participants will receive a medal and each sub-category will have five winners who will receive grand prizes consisting of pet products.

Besides the race, there will also be a variety of booths and games for visitors and participants.

“It is a very good opportunity for them to race,” say Wong and Tey. “By taking part in this dog race, they also get freebies from the booths.”

So if you are up to giving your dog a chance to socialise with other furry friends as well as enjoy a healthy outing, start to practise running with your loyal dog by your side.

KIMANIS, Jan 16 — In what was possibly the biggest turnout in the Kimanis by-election campaign so far, the “Himpunan Muafakat Rakyat Sabah” gathered federal and state Opposition to deliver one message: a vote for Warisan is a vote for the Sabah Temporary Pass (PSS).

The crowd gathered at the new Kimanis Commercial Centre open ground was the largest seen in the campaigning period so far, estimated at over 1,000 strong, a portion of whom were clad in Barisan Nasional (BN) blue.

Set up with “live” stage performances and food stalls, people started arriving as early as 7pm before speeches commenced an hour later.

The country’s Opposition was out in full force. Umno president Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Sabah Umno chief Datuk Bung Moktar Radin, MCA president Datuk Wee Ka Siong, Parti Bersatu Sabah premier adviser Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan and president Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah deputy president Arthur Kurup, PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan and former Kimanis MP Datuk Seri Anifah Aman were among those present.

The theme of the night was clear: to play up the issue of the PSS — a document for foreigners residing in Sabah — as much as possible.

Campaigning hard for BN’s candidate, Datuk Mohamad Alamin, all speakers listed reasons to fear or go against the PSS that they have been outlining throughout the first 12 days of the campaign period.

Pairin, in a rare public appearance, told the crowd that he never proposed the PSS or a resident pass, nor was it among the recommendations of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Pairin was likely responding to Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement recently that the PSS was a version of a proposal by the RCI that was recommended by the technical committee chaired by Pairin.

“I looked for it everywhere but I couldn’t find it. It’s not there. They said it started from BN but I did not see this,” he said.

Pairin said he was only heading the smaller of two committees and refuted proposing the pass.

“We didn’t accept the resident pass as a proposal,” he said, while adding that BN took some steps to address the illegal immigrant issue.

His statement was backed by Zahid, who reiterated that he was in charge of the main committee that Pairin reported to and denied discussing the PSS.

“I am the chairman of the main committee to review the recommendations from the technical committee. I want to fully deny the report that we had proposed the PSS. There are many former Cabinet ministers here who will attest that we never approved it,” he said.

Voting for the Kimanis by-election is on January 18.

Encryption battle reignited as US at loggerheads with Apple

APPLE and the US government are at loggerheads for the second time in four years over unlocking iPhones connected to a mass shooting, reviving debate over law enforcement access to encrypted devices.

Attorney General Bill Barr said Monday that Apple failed to provide “substantive assistance” in unlocking two iPhones in the investigation into the December shooting deaths of three US sailors at a Florida naval station, which he called an “act of terrorism”.

Hamid raps Berita Harian over ‘inaccurate’ FB post

BERITA Harian’s Facebook post purportedly revealing the identities of individuals arrested in a raid on a Jalan Puchong condominium last weekend is inaccurate, said Abdul Hamid Bador.

The inspector-general of police told a press conference yesterday that investigations are still in the early stages, therefore, he cannot name the people detained, as this would be in conflict with the law.
