ABU DHABI: Six times world champion Lewis Hamilton ended a triumphant Formula One season in style on Sunday with a dominant victory from pole position for Mercedes in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his 250th race.

Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstappen finished second to cement third place in the championship, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc third on track but in danger of disqualification for a fuel irregularity.

Valtteri Bottas finished fourth for Mercedes.

Hamilton’s 84th career victory, fifth in Abu Dhabi and 11th of the season meant the Briton equalled his own Formula One record of 33 consecutive finishes in the points. He also set the fastest lap.

Mercedes had already won both championships for an unprecedented sixth season in a row.

KUALA BERANG, Dec 1 — Severe flooding in several areas in the Hulu Terengganu district this morning left about 30 tourists from five families stranded at a mosque in Kampung Pasir Dula, here.

The families took refuge at the mosque as the main road to Kuala Berang town was cut off, with the water-level rising up to a metre.

Shaarani Ismail, 40, who was on holiday with his wife and four children said the family had long been looking forward to the trip to the East Coast.

“I worked in Terengganu 10 years ago before moving to Perak. So, with the holiday, I also thought it would be a good opportunity to visit the former caregivers of our children in Seberang Takir,” he said when contacted by Bernama tonight.

Shaarani said he was relieved when the Village Community Management Council (MPKK) helped out by placing the family at the home of one of the villagers.

Kampung Pasir Dula MPKK chairman Mohd Azmi Ton Busu, 48, said all the tourists, who were from Perak and Penang, had been placed in villagers’ homes while waiting for the floods to recede.

“Hopefully they can continue their journey to Kuala Terengganu tomorrow,” he said when contacted. — Bernama

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 30 — Penang has succeeded in recording a decrease in violent and property crime cases from January to October 31 this year compared to the same period last year.

Penang police chief Datuk T. Narenasagaran said the overall crime rate also fell by 2.3 per cent as a result of cooperation between police with various enforcement agencies and the people.

He said public safety and order in Penang was good and under control.

“For violent crimes, there were 858 cases reported in 2018 while in 2019 only 760 cases were recorded. For crime on properties, there were 3,416 cases reported last year and this year the number was 3,414 cases,” he said when speaking a town hall session “Discussion with The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM)” here today.

Nonetheless, he cautioned of an increasing trend in commercial and cyber crimes in the state in 2019. — Bernama

Former Liverpool player denies Man City victory with late gem

MANCHESTER: Champions Manchester City dropped two vital points in the Premier League title race as Jonjo Shelvey’s stunning late strike earned struggling Newcastle United a 2-2 home draw on Saturday.

A scrappy game was drifting towards a draw when Kevin De Bruyne’s 82nd-minute thunderbolt looked to have won the game for City who began the day nine points behind Liverpool.

Yet for the second time in the match, Newcastle replied quickly as Shelvey curled a shot past Ederson in the 88th minute.

Raheem Sterling had fired City in front in the 22nd minute but their lead lasted only three minutes as Jetro Willems finished off a fine Newcastle move.

Despite enjoying overwhelming territorial superiority, City lacked their usual cutting edge as Newcastle sat deep but De Bruyne’s late 25-metre strike which cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar appeared to have sealed it.

Newcastle had other ideas though and grabbed a point to leave City manager Pep Guardiola frustrated.

Should Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove Albion later on Saturday, they will move 11 points clear of the champions.

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle moved six points clear of the relegation zone before the later kickoffs.
