Court rules Jawi can be taught in vernacular schools

THE High Court in George Town today ruled that Jawi is part of Bahasa Malaysia and therefore can be taught to pupils in Chinese and Tamil schools.

PETALING JAYA: Chef-de-mission Megat Zulkarnain Omardin admits the national contingent is aware typhoon Kammuri hitting the Philippines during SEA Games remains a possibility.

Megat said organisers PHISGOC’s contingency plan is to move outdoor sports to a safer venue, reported Bernama.

“They told us they expected the typhoon by year end,” he told Malaysian media in Manila today.

“PHISGOC have a plan B mapped out if the weather got out of control.

“No one can control the weather. They (meteorologists) have seen early signs but we pray the typhoon does not happen.”

Government weather-monitoring agency Pagasa had warned the typhoon was expected to hit the south island of Luzon, which includes SEA Games-hosting cities Manila, Clark and Subic.

According to several local portals, the typhoon is expected to enter the country on Saturday evening but the worst effects are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

While Phil Star reported Kammuri was headed toward Luzon carrying winds at 120-150kph with heavy rains, Pagasa has been unable to predict its exact route as it is still some way off Philippines.

The biennial regional games officially starts with the opening ceremony on Saturday at the world’s largest indoor arena, Philippine Arena, in Bulacan.

Dutch father who locked up kids in hidden room charged with sexual abuse

AMSTERDAM: Dutch prosecutors said on Thursday they suspected the father of a family that was found locked away in a farmhouse room of having sexually abused two of his nine children.

Police discovered five siblings and their ailing father last month in a hidden room where they appeared to have lived in seclusion for years, at a farm in the north of the Netherlands.

The discovery followed a tip-off from a brother who said he had escaped.

The 67-year-old father was detained at the time on charges of abuse, unlawful detention and money laundering.

In addition to the five children found at the farm and the one who escaped, the man had three other children who did not live at the farm.

Prosecutors said on Thursday they now also suspected the father of having sexually abused two of those siblings.

DNA tests had shown that the children who lived at the farm, estimated to be between the ages of 18 to 25, all had the same parents and that the detained man was indeed their father, prosecutors said.

The children were never registered at birth and had never gone to school, both of which are required by law in the Netherlands.

A 58-year-old man who paid the rent on the farmhouse was taken into custody on similar charges as the father when the family was found.

Both men remain in custody and are expected to appear in court in January.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 ― Delegates to the Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) National Convention 2019 next week are free to criticise the party’s leadership during the debate session, says party vice-president Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

He said the party’s top leaders would give a lot of space to any delegate who wished to debate on the motions or to give their views.

“Parti Amanah is transparent, so they (the delegates) can criticise on anything but do it civilly, and I think they already know the motions to be debated on.

“I feel this is normal in Amanah where they give their views and we (leaders) explain to them,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.

Mujahid, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, said the convention this year would be more interesting as Amanah’s 25 central committee members would be choosing a new party leadership line-up.

He also hoped that the new party leadership would champion the “Rahmatan Lil Alamin” (mercy to all creation) agenda and more importantly, the policy of “Shared Prosperity”.

“Also, as part of the ruling coalition, to pursue the ‘Malaysia Baharu’ aspirations where the nation’s multiracial and multireligious community could continue to live in peace and harmony,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said among the issues to be touched on during the party convention would be unity and some of the (Pakatan Harapan) manifestos that had been achieved but not conveyed to the people.

“There must be unity in Pakatan Harapan and we need to stress on this and on how we can reach out to the people on these manifestos,” he said at the Parliament lobby.

The Amanah National Convention 2019 will be held from December 6 to 8 at the IDCC (Ideal Convention Centre), Section 15, Shah Alam. ― Bernama
