KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — The existing leadership positions in TM Bhd will be maintained pending the resolution of a recent boardroom row, said Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

According to the Star Online news portal, Lim said this meant Rosli Man will continue as chairman while Imri Mokhar will stay on as acting chief executive after Rosli refused to confirm him for the position permanently.

Lim also reiterated that Imri’s appointment as the permanent CEO was the result of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s instructions.

“It was done according to procedures, since the orders came from the PM directly.

“Up till now, I have not received any order from the PM to change either the chairman or the CEO,” Lim was quoted as saying in George Town, Penang, yesterday.

The minister said any changes will be announced officially but added that his ministry would not recognise other candidates proposed by third parties.

On Friday, The Edge reported that Rosli refused to confirm Imri as the permanent CEO of TM ostensibly because the former had his own candidates in mind for the role.

TM is a government-linked corporation in which sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional controls a 26 per cent stake.

Kadir Jasin: Rumours could hurt efforts to capture Jho Low

Low is portrayed as a central figure in the global 1MDB scandal and has been charged in Malaysia and elsewhere over related offences.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Speculation about fugitive financier Low Taek Jho may compromise genuine efforts to secure his arrest, Datuk A. Kadir Jasin cautioned the public today.

The media advisor to the prime minister acknowledged that right-minded Malaysians were anxious to see Low, also known as Jho Low, captured and brought home to stand trial here over charges related to the 1MDB global corruption scandal.

“However, let’s not spread false hope that will end up disappointing us all or spread misinformation.

“Sometimes spreading unverified information and fake news may jeopardise secret operations to trace, arrest and extradite fugitives such as Jho Low,” he wrote on his personal blog today.

Kadir also asserted that the situation with Jho Low was precarious as the latter was still rich and may be taking measures to prevent his capture.

He also urged the country not to lose sight of individuals such as former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and their alleged roles in the 1MDB scandal, saying that Jho Low would not have become who he is without the support of such people.

Kadir also expressed concern over the readiness of all sections of society, including those in senior positions, to believe unverified information spread on social media.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador was forced to publicly refute a message spread on social media that claimed the authorities have managed to capture Jho Low in China.

The IGP previously said his agency was aware of Low whereabouts and expressed confidence that the latter would be caught soon.

Low is portrayed as a central figure in the global 1MDB scandal and has been charged in Malaysia and elsewhere over related offences.

Lawyers for Najib here have sought to depict the former prime minister as a victim of an alleged conspiracy that Low purportedly orchestrated.

ANAHEIM: Hundreds of Star Wars fans lined up before the crack of dawn on Friday outside Disneyland as the California park opened the doors of a new mega-attraction based on the iconic film series.

The US$1 billion theme park, called “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge,” was open only to lucky visitors who managed to reserve tickets ahead of time that allowed them to roam the new land for a total of four hours.

Only those with reservations will be able to visit “Galaxy’s Edge” for the first three weeks, after which it will be open to the public.

“‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’ is absolutely amazing and we are thrilled to finally share it with the world,” Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger said at a pre-opening ceremony on Wednesday.

“Now, for the first time, fans will be able to immerse themselves in the iconic stories that have captured audiences’ imaginations for decades and live their own Star Wars adventures in the most creative, innovative and ambitious land we’ve ever built.”

The park features rides, including on the Millennium Falcon, as well as Star Wars characters such as Stormtroopers, the mighty Chewbacca and Rey, a hero of the resistance in the futuristic land of Batuu.

On “Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run,” guests will go on a cargo run that features multiple storylines depending on how they pilot Han Solo’s beloved spaceship.

‘Waiting for the longest time’

Star Wars fanatics will also be able to down exotic drinks such as spicy Bloody Rancor or Carbon Freeze at Oga’s Cantina or refresh themselves with Blue or Green Milk.

And if they have any money left at the end of the day, they can fork out US$200 – before tax – to build their own lightsabers at Savi’s Workshop or spend nearly US$100 for a custom droid.

A similar Star Wars park will also open at Disney World in Florida at the end of August.

Miguel Langarcia, one of the lucky fans who was able to reserve a ticket for the Friday opening in California said he was over the moon at being among the first to experience the new attraction.

“I had four computers open at one time, trying to get a reservation,” he told AFP as he entered the park. “I finally got in, so I’m excited to go today.”

Joe Kaniwa, another visitor, said he didn’t mind the steep entrance price of nearly US$150 per-adult given the experience.

“They want to make a lot of money, and they are making money,” he said. “But they also want to make people’s dream come true.

“Like you can have people from all generations, you know 40-, 50-year-olds, who have been waiting for this for the longest time, and now they can be part of (this) world.”

LABUAN, June 1 — The Labuan Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is practising openness in the membership recruitment exercise without having to apply persuasive approach.

Its pro tem chief Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman said the existence of all Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties of DAP, PKR, Amanah, Bersatu and PH friendly-partner of Warisan here augurs well for the PH’s strength and solidarity with more people-oriented programmes could be carried out.

“Bersatu is the last PH component party being established in Labuan which was only a month ago after being consented to by Bersatu’s central leadership.

“Nevertheless, it already has supporters and more than a thousand registered members and our machinery has kicked-off the membership drive and we received an increase membership,” he told reporters after an event at Kg Sg Labu Homestay Hall last night.

Suhaili said Bersatu Labuan has currently established branches in all the 17 central voting districts.

“We want to avoid more than one branch in one village which is potentially leads to disunity,” he said. — Bernama
