French rapper MHD faces verdict over youth’s murder

ACCLAIMED French rapper MHD was today awaiting with eight co-accused a verdict in the trial over the murder of a young man in Paris in 2018.  

MHD, whose real name is Mohamed Sylla, once again insisted on his innocence as he made his final statements before the court retired to render the verdict after three weeks of proceedings.  

Hajiji confident GRS, Pakatan cooperation leads to state election success

PARTI Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) is confident that cooperation between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and the state’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) could lead to success for the coalition in the next state election. 

Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, who is also Gagasan Rakyat’s president, said this confidence was based on the increasing acceptance and support from people towards Gagasan Rakyat as a component party under GRS. 

India confiscates properties of top Sikh separatist

INDIA’S top investigation agency confiscated today the properties of a prominent Sikh separatist and close ally of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, whose killing has sparked a diplomatic row between India and Canada.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a lawyer believed to be based in Canada, was designated as a terrorist by Indian authorities in 2020 and is wanted on charges of terrorism and sedition.

Sicilian mafia boss Messina Denaro ‘in a coma’

NOTORIOUS Sicilian Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro, captured in January after three decades on the run, is in a coma in hospital and no longer being fed, media reports said yesterday.   

The 61-year-old has been suffering from colon cancer for several years. It was his decision to seek treatment that led to his arrest following a visit to a clinic in the Sicilian capital Palermo.  

Police tracking down 2 Sri Lankan triple murder suspects

A POLICE manhunt is underway for two male Sri Lankan suspects over their alleged involvement in the murders of three of their fellow countrymen at a shophouse on Perhentian Street in Lower Kovil Village, Sentul last night. 

Kuala Lumpur police chief Allaudeen Abdul Majid said both suspects were staying at a married couple’s place on the second floor of the shophouse before the murder occurred.  

Shariah court management must continue to be improved, says Agong

YANG di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today called for the management of shariah courts, including the position of judges and lawyers, to be strengthened and improved to widen the authority of the Islamic legal system in the country.

In addition, he said shariah courts must also use their discretion wisely and always be fair to all parties in making decisions, especially in cases related to family matters and shariah criminal offences.

Pope urges Europe against treating migrants as invaders

POPE Francis today urged European governments to welcome migrants instead of viewing them as invaders, striding into in a hugely sensitive political debate again inflamed by mass arrivals.

“Those who risk their lives at sea do not invade, they look for welcome,” Francis said in a speech closing a conference of bishops and young people from around the Mediterranean in the French port city of Marseille.
