Justin Trudeau admits to racist ‘brownface’ makeup

CANADA’S Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a fervent advocate of the multiculturalism integral to Canadian identity, apologised for wearing brownface makeup to a party at a school where he taught 18 years ago.

Time magazine published the photograph one week into a federal election campaign with Trudeau’s Liberal Party in a tight contest against the Conservatives led by Andrew Scheer.

Bangladesh rural poor bear financial burden of climate change

POOR, rural Bangladeshis are spending far more than the government and aid agencies to combat the impacts of climate change, diverting what little money they have away from basic needs, a study said today.

Bangladesh – a densely populated and impoverished low-lying nation of 168 million people – is among the most vulnerable to global warming with rising sea levels threatening coastal villages.

Don’t ask me about winning Champions League, says PSG coach

PARIS: After three consecutive last-16 eliminations in the Champions League, Paris St Germain were taking their impressive 3-0 victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday with a large pinch of salt.

In their first Champions League game since Manchester United’s shock 3-1 win in Paris knocked them out last season, PSG were brilliant against the Spanish side, but they know only too well that they still have plenty to prove.

“Before anyone asks a question … If someone asks me if we’re going to win the Champions League, I’m out of here,” Tuchel told a news conference after PSG had crushed 13-time European champions Real in their Group A opener at the Parc des Princes.

The United debacle followed a 5-2 aggregate defeat by Real Madrid in 2018 and a memorable loss to Barcelona in 2017 with a 6-1 defeat at the Camp Nou following a 4-0 home win.

“We did not want to send a message but it is true that we controlled this game, we were well prepared,” PSG centre back Thiago Silva said.

Having spent over €1 billion on players since Qatar Sports Investment took over in 2011, PSG have been expected to win the Champions League but they have fallen spectacularly short in recent seasons.

They are now focused on the first task of getting through to the knockout phase from a group featuring Real, Club Brugge and Galatasaray.

Tuchel’s side were outstanding against Real with Angel Di Maria scoring a double in the absence of the formidable trio of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani – both injured – and the suspended Neymar.

“Maybe the pressure was not too high on the players because those three were missing,” said Tuchel.

“Without them we were not the favourites and it freed the minds of those who were on the pitch tonight, they did not feel the pressure.”

Although the PSG coach acknowledged he could not afford to miss the “MCN” trio for too long, he was satisfied the rest of the squad made up for their absence.

“We can do without them for a few games if all the others play at their best,” he said.

PSG recruited during the close season, notably bringing in goalkeeper Keylor Navas from Real Madrid and striker Mauro Icardi on loan from Inter Milan.

But it was midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who joined from Everton, who caught the eye on Wednesday, setting up Di Maria for the second goal and working tirelessly.

“Idrissa, it’s incredible. I don’t have the words. I don’t know how many balls he won today,” Silva said.

Emery rests Ozil, Sokratis for Arsenal’s Europa League trip to Frankfurt

LONDON: Arsenal manager Unai Emery has decided to rest playmaker Mesut Ozil and centre back Sokratis Papastathopoulos for Thursday’s Europa League group stage opener at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Ozil made his first appearance of the season in Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Watford, playing 71 minutes, but Emery said the German midfielder would be rested ahead of the weekend’s Premier League game against Aston Villa.

“Sokratis and Mesut (are) rested for that match. We’re going to play another match on Sunday,” Emery told reporters.

“My decision is because he (Ozil) played, I’m thinking (of) tomorrow’s first XI and after that deciding who can be the best for tomorrow.

“The first match he played on Sunday he played good with his capacity and skills, his first minutes for us was good. Now he is going to be helping us. Sunday we are going to play another match.”

Arsenal were heavily criticised after losing a two-goal lead against bottom side Watford, with their strategy of playing out from the defence backfiring and allowing the home side to fire a whopping 31 shots on goal.

However, Emery said Arsenal would stick to their guns against Frankfurt and look to improve on Sunday’s performance by taking a leaf out of their first-half display against Watford when they went 2-0 up.

“The first analysis is on how we can improve and recover our confidence, starting and controlling the match,” Emery added. “Sunday we struggled more than we wanted and also we made some mistakes and conceded some goals.

“We want to control every game with the ball, with positioning. We did on Sunday in the first half.”

Frankfurt reached the semifinals last season, where they were beaten by eventual champions Chelsea and Emery – who has won the Europa League three times with Sevilla but lost last year’s final – said he was looking forward to a “new challenge” this season.

“Usually Eintracht are doing high pressing,” Emery said. “Some mistakes we made on Sunday we need to improve. Tomorrow is another challenge to show how we can improve.

“Last year Frankfurt played in the same semifinal as Chelsea. To start tomorrow with them is a tough match.

“We have good feelings for the competition in this season. We lost the final last season but this is a new challenge for us.”

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — Another warrant has been issued against controversial Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik by the Indian authorities, in relation to a 2016 money laundering case against him.

India’s The Economic Times reported the warrant was issued against the preacher by Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court judge PP Rajvaidya, after a plea was filed by the national agency Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The ED has claimed to identify up to 193.06 crore rupees (RM113.42 million) as criminal proceeds from the 2016 case.

Last week Dr Zakir moved a plea via his lawyer to seek up to two months’ time to appear before the court. The plea was rejected and on Monday the ED moved a fresh plea for a non-bailable warrant.

In the same year as the case, he was booked by the agency on a first information report filed by the National Investigation Agency under India’s Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Dr Zakir last visited India in 2016, where he is wanted for money laundering and inciting extremism through hate speeches.

The fugitive Indian national is currently living in Malaysia, where he has permanent residency but was recently prohibited from public speaking due to remarks he made that were deemed offensive against the Indian and Chinese communities here.
