Ringgit extends recovery against dollar
THE ringgit extended its earlier recovery momentum towards the end of today’s trading and closed marginally higher against the US dollar as risk appetite improved amid weaker greenback sentiment. At 6pm, the local note ended at 4.6115/6160 versus the greenback, compared with yesterday’s closing of 4.6185/6235.
Rasheed is Bank Negara governor from next month
BANK Negara Malaysia (BNM) today announced that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to appoint Shaik Abdul Rasheed Abdul Ghaffour as governor for a five-year term effective July 1. In a statement, the central bank said Rasheed will succeed Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus, who completes her five-year term on June 30.
UN says Myanmar junta halts humanitarian access to cyclone survivors
MYANMAR’S junta has suspended travel authorisations for aid workers trying to reach hundreds of thousands of people in the cyclone-ravaged Rakhine state, the UN’s humanitarian affairs office said today. Cyclone Mocha brought lashing rain and winds of 195kph to Myanmar and neighbouring Bangladesh last month, killing at least 148 people in Myanmar.
